The School of Foreign Languages at Guizhou University of Technology, formerly known as the Foreign Language Teaching Center, was founded in 2013. In 2019, it established an English undergraduate major, with approval from the Ministry of Education. In September 2020, it began to recruit the first batch of English major students, aiming to cultivate high-quality applied talents with strong practical ability, high information literacy, all-around development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, and innovative and entrepreneurial qualities.
The School of Foreign Languages currently has 36 faculty members, including 30 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 3 professors, 6 associate professors, and 6 have overseas study or visiting scholar experience. The proportion of teachers with senior professional titles accounts for 30% of the full-time teachers.
Since the founding of our School, remarkable progress has been made. Our teachers have won the first prize of the 10th Guizhou Province Teaching Achievement Award. Moreover, 1 national online first-class course, six provincial "Golden Courses", 1 first prize and 1 second prize in the Guizhou College Teachers Teaching Innovation Competition, 1 provincial first-class teaching team (cultivation), 1 school-level first-class courses, 1 school-level key course, 4 school-level ideological and political demonstration courses, 1 school-level ideological and political demonstration major, and 3 school-level teaching teams have been successfully built. Furthermore, 1 ideological and political case course was broadcast on Xinhuanet, and 1 course was broadcast on the People's Open Class "Big Ideological and Political Course" MOOC platform. In addition, our teachers have published more than 130 academic papers, published 8 monographs, edited 4 textbooks, participated in the editing of 2 textbooks, undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects at all levels and types (including 9 provincial and ministerial projects), and presided over more than 10 horizontal projects. Additionally, our teachers participated in teaching competitions at the school level and above, and won more than 20 awards in total.
The School has 17 language laboratories, including 5 online language laboratories, 10 professional language laboratories, and 2 oral laboratories, with a total construction area of about 1,076 square meters, a total of 1,056 seats, and a total value of equipment and instruments of more than 6.35 million yuan. They mainly serve the school's public foreign language teaching and professional foreign language teaching.
Moreover, guided by the principle of fostering virtue through education, the School focuses on college English teaching and the construction of English majors, and constantly carries out reforms and innovations in cultivating students' language application ability and independent learning ability. In recent years, students have participated in various discipline competitions at all levels and won more than 100 awards, including more than 20 provincial and above awards; 4 people have won national scholarships, more than 50 people have won national inspirational scholarships, 1 provincial advanced class collective, 2 provincial three-good students, 1 provincial outstanding student cadre, and 2 provincial outstanding graduates; 5 students have been selected to exchange and study at the University of Macau and Beijing Technology and Business University. The college attaches importance to the cultivation of students' comprehensive qualities, supports students to participate in innovative entrepreneurial projects, social practice and other activities, and students have presided over 41 college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects (including 1 national project and 15 provincial and above projects), and participated in social practice activities for more than 150 people.
